Max's Art Portfolio

For this piece, I’ve mashed up two of my favorite characters: Patrick Star from SpongeBob SquarePants and Pickle Rick from Rick and Morty. These characters come from completely different shows, but I wanted to blend them because I love both their unique qualities—Patrick's goofy innocence and Pickle Rick's chaotic, intelligent humor.
To create the mash-up, I used layering, tracing, and the pen tool. I focused on simple shapes like circles and ovals to capture Patrick’s soft, cartoonish look while integrating Pickle Rick’s sharper, more detailed features. The use of these tools helped me combine their styles in a way that still honors their original forms.
What I’d like the audience to notice is how these two very different characters can come together in a fun, unexpected way, showing how diverse design elements can merge to create something entirely new.

In this piece, I used organic shapes for most of Kevin the Sea Cucumber’s body, with geometric shapes applied only to the sharper areas for contrast. My process involved tracing the original image over the artboard, working in layers for different body parts, and turning layers on and off to check my progress.

I want the audience to notice that art is about creativity, not complexity—the first idea is where it all begins. I’m proud of the final vectorization of Kevin, as I feel it captures his character clearly and smoothly. While there’s always room for improvement, I’m happy with the result.
